One Shots
A Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) One-Shot is a self-contained adventure designed to be completed in a single session, usually lasting 3-6 hours. It has a clear beginning, middle, and end, often featuring a straightforward plot with a single objective, such as solving a mystery, defeating a villain, or retrieving a lost artefact. One shots can play with characters at any level, but there is rarely any chance to “level up.” One-shots are great for introducing new players to the game, experimenting with unique characters or mechanics, and providing a low-commitment way to enjoy D&D.
In contrast, a traditional multi-session campaign is an ongoing story that unfolds over many sessions, sometimes spanning months or even years. Campaigns allow for deeper character development, long-term storytelling, and complex world-building. Characters in a campaign may begin at any level and will usually gain levels at a specific pace. Players have the opportunity to explore intricate plots, build relationships with NPCs, and experience character progression over time.
The key difference is scope and commitment—one-shots provide a quick, contained experience, while campaigns offer a longer, evolving narrative.
Regardless of the type of One Shot, Bargammon’s Tavern is happy to provide ALL necessary equipment to play DND – this includes character sheets (blank ones and pre-filled ones), paper and writing utensils, dice, and even maps and miniatures – although Players are always welcome to bring their own!
“Youth” One Shots
Bargammon’s Tavern is a venue that primarily caters to an adult crowd, although children under 14 are welcome if accompanied by a legal guardian.
Youth One Shots are specifically designed to be accessible to younger players, typically with simpler plots and simplified character sheets, and DM’s with an extra dose of patience and ability to teach. These sessions are limited to players aged 12-17.
We ask that one legal guardian be present for each group of young people (i.e. 2 or more youth may be accompanied by the same guardian so long as they are known to that adult). Legal Guardians do not need to be present at the game table itself, and are not charged their own table time for being present.
“Beginner” One Shots
These are One Shots that are designed to be accessible to people who have never played DND before, or have a limited amount of experience with the game. DM’s are prepared to spend extra time explaining rules and allowing for players to take extra time in making decisions. It is up to the Players to decide if they are “Beginners” or not, and more experienced Players are welcome to join a Beginner One Shot, so long as they are aware that these games are for lower level characters and may have a slower pace.
Beginner Players are not expected to bring their own character sheets; if you would like to bring your own you are advised to get in touch with the DM ahead of time (best done via the DND Channel in our Discord Server) to make sure they conform to the DM’s table rules. (You can use DND Beyond‘s Character Creation tool to make sure your character conforms to the Basic Rules in the Player’s Handbook.)
“Experienced” One Shots
Similarly, it is entirely up to the Player to decide if they are “Experienced” or not. DM’s will assume that Players have some basic familiarity with the rules, and have played in some number of previous games. The DM may or may not provide pre-filled character sheets, so Experienced Players are encouraged to create their own characters ahead of time, and are strongly encouraged to submit them to the DM ahead of the game for approval.
Longer (Multi-Session) Campaigns
Bargammon’s Tavern has been offering One Shots since its inception, and plans to continue doing so. Our aim is to build a strong, confident, and committed community of DND Players in Chippenham and the surrounding area. In the future, we hope to have enough people around to be able to confidently offer multi-session campaigns that meet regularly on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.
If you have your own established group of Players and a DM and you’re looking for a fun and comfortable venue for everyone to meet at, please consider Booking A Table with us!
